IRELAND'S HISTORIC SCIENCE CENTRE Ireland's Historic Science Centre,
based in the Demesne stable block, is a celebration of Irish science based around the significant
achievements of the Parsons' family of Birr Castle. The Galleries of Discovery, in the restored
Stable Block, originally designed by Mary Rosse demonstrate these achievements in an exciting
interactive manner, showing the many pioneering achievements of the Parsons family and of other
great Irish scientists in the fields of astronomy, engineering, photography and horticulture.
Also, the Demesne is home to the Great Telescope, constructed by the 3rd Earl of Rosse in the 1840s
and now fully restored, with a new mirror specially cast to replace the original now held by the
Science Museum in London. Address:
